Billed by the race organizers as “one of the toughest marathons in the United States,” Prescott’s Whiskey Row Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K (and 2-mile Fun Run) features a course that definitely lives up to its reputation, with a steep climb from the starting line to the half-way point in the race of roughly 1,000 feet in elevation.
From there, those running in the half marathon follow a course that takes them out 6.55 miles, and then back in reverse along the same six-and-a-half mile route.
Runners also can expect a mix of terrain surfaces during the race, as the first five miles of the course unfold along paved roads, while the remainder (about a mile and a half for those running the half marathon) takes place on dirt forest service roads inside the Prescott National Forest, whose more than 1.2 million acres are filled with varieties of chaparral, pinon pine, juniper and Ponderosa pine trees just to the west of the city of Prescott.
The race route basically takes runners on one long uphill stretch from the start to the half-way point, unfolding along Gurley Street, Hassayampa Village Lane and Copper Basin Road to the mid-way point.
Once runners reach the turn-around, then they head back along the route they’ve just run toward Prescott, where the finish line lies on the eastern side of the courthouse, just off Montezuma on Cortez Street.
With paved roads for most of the first half of the race, the terrain then becomes rugged, run along forest trail roads. Weather conditions can be severe, and emergency vehicles are staffed an on the course throughout the race for any participants who get dizzy or experience pain or exhaustion. For those who don’t feel up to the longer race distances, there’s also a 2-mile fun run & walk.
