Prescott’s is Arizona’s Christmas City
Prescott celebrates Christmas in a big way with lights, parades, and music. The bright lights and excitement start on Saturday, November 26 with Prescott’s 21st Annual Christmas Light Parade from 6-8pm. The parade of dazzling, lighted floats turns everyone into “tiny tots with their eyes all aglow” as it winds through the downtown area. The After-Parade party continues with a bonfire and the floats on display at the Mile High Middle School fields only a block away from Whiskey Row.
Arizona’s Christmas City Christmas Parade celebrates its 34th year with the theme of “All I want for Christmas” on Saturday Dec 3 from 1-3 pm. Hang around, because at 5pm the tradition continues as 2016 marks the 62nd year of decorating the Yavapai County Courthouse Square. When the lights switch on, the big elms and evergreens on the Square and the Courthouse itself become Holiday beacons of color. The lights remain on through the holiday season.
Following the lighting, head down to Sharlot Hall Museum for their “Frontier Christmas Open House” of nostalgic and historic fun. Luminarias, hand-made decorations, hearth-baked cookies, hot tea and cocoa remind of Christmases long ago. The museum is located at 415 West Gurley St, just 2 blocks west of the Courthouse Square. Admission is $5 for those over 15 years old, or free to museum members.
Acker Music turns all of downtown into a performance venue on Dec 9 from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. Over 100 musicians entertain in businesses and on the streets. Join the throngs for free hot chocolate and other traditional goodies. Like jazz? Or barbershop? Country Western? Perhaps acoustic guitar and folk? Small choirs? It’s all there and more in historic downtown Prescott. All funds raised go to art scholarships for youth.
The Elks Theater offers several Holiday musical events in the newly restored historical building on Gurley St.:
Dec 2 at 7pm, enjoy classic holiday entertainment with “In the Christmas mood”, featuring timeless treasures.
Dec 10 at 7pm, “Blue Christmas, a rock ‘n’ roll holiday extravaganza”, with the music of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis.
